Shelly Pro 3EM makes the most sense when you want a current three-phase meter that can sit in the panel, monitor import and export clearly, and feed richer local data into Home Assistant, MQTT, Modbus, or other automations without giving up a mainstream app path entirely.

It fits best for:

  • three-phase homes or small sites that want better panel-level visibility than a clamp-only monitor usually gives
  • solar households that want clearer import, export, and per-phase data for self-consumption or EV-aware automations
  • users who care about local networking, scripting, webhooks, and LAN access instead of relying only on a vendor cloud
  • installations where one device may be used on a three-phase supply or across multiple circuits on a single phase

Watch-outs:

  • this is a panel-installed electrician job rather than a simple plug-and-play retrofit monitor
  • the meter itself does not include a built-in relay, so external load control needs the Shelly Pro 3EM Switch Add-on
  • while it can monitor single-phase systems, it is usually most compelling when you actually need multi-circuit or three-phase visibility

Compared with simpler homeowner monitors, Shelly Pro 3EM is a more technical choice, but it gives much stronger flexibility for local dashboards, automations, and mixed solar-plus-load monitoring.
