Shelly EM Gen4 is a compact single-phase smart energy meter for homes and small commercial spaces that need circuit or appliance-level visibility without replacing the monitored conductor with an inline meter. Installation and sensor choice

The compact enclosure is intended for retrofit locations such as standard wall boxes, behind sockets, beside appliances, or other limited spaces. A qualified electrician should install the mains wiring and orient each CT correctly.

CT choice matters when comparing this meter. The package includes one 50 A CT, while Shelly lists compatible 80 A and 120 A options and supports up to two CTs. The stored 120 A maximum represents the supported meter/CT range, not the rating of the included clamp.

Measurement and accuracy

The meter is specified for single-phase, two-channel monitoring. Shelly lists current accuracy of 2% from 1 A to 50 A and 5% below 1 A, with 2% voltage accuracy. The official product documentation does not state a formal IEC or MID accuracy class, so this page records the published percentage performance instead of inventing a class.

This distinction matters for selection: the EM Gen4 is useful for operational monitoring, automation, and energy analysis, but buyers needing a certified billing meter should verify the required metrology standard separately.

Local access, cloud, and Home Assistant

Shelly Cloud is optional for core local use. The embedded Web interface and local RPC, MQTT, HTTP(S), and WebSocket paths support monitoring and automation on the local network. Remote Shelly app access uses Internet connectivity and Shelly Cloud.

Home Assistant officially supports Shelly device generations and communicates directly with Gen 2 and newer devices through the local RPC path, so a cloud connection is not required for the Home Assistant integration.

Solar import and export context

Shelly's energy-meter data API exposes active returned-energy counters, which can support solar production or grid-export tracking when the CT direction and channel configuration are correct. This is measurement support, not a complete solar management system; tariff logic, netting, and automation still depend on the surrounding configuration.

Best fit and limitations

Shelly EM Gen4 is a strong fit for users who want a compact, locally accessible meter with flexible smart-home protocols and a selectable CT range. It is less suitable when three-phase metering, revenue-grade certification, or a preassembled panel-monitoring kit is required.
