Overview
The Fronius Smart Meter IP 5kA-3 is the high-current member of the Fronius Smart Meter family. It is intended for installations where a direct-connected residential meter is not enough and the site needs external current transformers for larger single-phase or three-phase services.
In EnergyMeterHub it should be treated as an energy-meter record. It measures energy flow for a Fronius solar system; it is not itself a solar inverter, standalone battery, EV charger, or generic RS485 gateway.
Core Features
- CT-operated bidirectional metering for consumption and feed-in visibility.
- Primary current-transformer range from 1 A to 5000 A when used with suitable 333 mV voltage-output CTs.
- Local communication through Modbus RTU over RS485 and Modbus TCP over Wi-Fi or LAN.
- Active energy accuracy listed by Fronius as Class 1 / Class B, with reactive energy Class 2.
- Indoor DIN-rail mounting in a 3-module DIN 43880 housing.
Installation And Measurement Context
This model is best understood as a system meter for installer-led Fronius solar projects, especially commercial or larger residential/commercial electrical services where CT-based measurement is required. The official technical data describes indoor DIN-rail installation and use with current transformers that have a 333 mV secondary output.
Because it is CT-operated, the selected CTs and the installation design matter. The max-current field is recorded as the Fronius-published primary CT range limit, not as a direct internal current path through the meter.
Compatibility And Data Access
The meter is designed for the Fronius ecosystem and supports local metering communication through Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP paths. Fronius Solar.web can provide cloud visualization and monitoring, but local metering communication does not depend on a vendor cloud for basic readings inside the Fronius system.
Home Assistant support is best framed through the official Fronius integration, which polls a Fronius inverter or datalogger and supports connected Fronius Smart Meter data. This is not a standalone Fronius Smart Meter cloud integration claim.
Good Fit
This device is a strong fit for Fronius PV systems with larger service currents, commercial or larger residential installations that need import/export visibility, sites using Fronius Solar.web plus local Modbus-capable metering paths, and projects where 333 mV CT selection is already part of the design.
Limits To Note
The Smart Meter IP 5kA-3 is not a general-purpose app-first home monitor. It belongs in a Fronius system design and depends on compatible CTs, wiring, and commissioning. Buyers comparing it with consumer monitors should pay attention to installation complexity, CT selection, and whether their inverter or monitoring stack can use the meter data directly.
