Device overview
The Carlo Gavazzi EM540DINAV23XS1X is a three-module DIN-rail energy analyzer for direct-connected circuits up to 65 A. Its exact order code combines the AV2 direct-current input, S1 RS-485 Modbus RTU communication, and X non-MID configuration.
Core features
It measures TRMS voltage and current, active, reactive, and apparent power, power factor, frequency, demand, and imported/exported active and reactive energy. Separate positive and negative totalizers make it useful for monitoring grid import and on-site generation export.
Installation and electrical fit
The meter supports two-phase three-wire and three-phase three- or four-wire systems across 120-240 V line-to-neutral and 208-415 V line-to-line networks. It connects directly at 5(65) A without external CTs and requires professional DIN-rail panel installation. The front is IP40 and the terminals are IP20, so it belongs inside a suitable enclosure.
Accuracy and comparison value
Official specifications state Class 1 active-energy accuracy under EN IEC 62053-21 and Class 2 reactive-energy accuracy under EN IEC 62053-23. The exact X variant is not MID certified. That distinction matters where readings are used for billing or regulated allocation; choose an appropriate PFx variant when MID certification is required.
Communication and local integration
The S1 interface provides local RS-485 Modbus RTU with configurable address, baud rate, parity, and stop bits. No vendor cloud is needed for measurement or register access. Home Assistant can poll the published Modbus registers through compatible RS-485 hardware or a Modbus gateway, but users must configure the register map manually.
Solar import/export use
The EM540 records consumption and generation and exposes imported and exported energy counters. It is suitable for monitoring solar flows, but it does not control an inverter or enforce export limits.
Best fit
This exact model suits installer-led residential, commercial, and light-industrial panels that need a compact 65 A direct meter, multiphase wiring flexibility, and open local data access. It is less suitable where native Wi-Fi, a consumer app, or certified MID billing is required.
Purchase and source notes
Carlo Gavazzi provides localized product and sales routes. Public pricing and guaranteed stock require a regional account or distributor check. Confirm local voltage, certification, wiring, and availability before purchase.
