The ABB A43 312-100 is a professional three-phase electricity meter for direct-connected circuits up to 80 A. It combines MID-approved billing-grade active-energy measurement with local RS-485 communication, multi-tariff functions, event and alarm features, and separate import and export registers.

Installation
This is a seven-module DIN-rail device for indoor electrical panels. ABB supports three-phase three-wire and four-wire systems through two- and three-element metering. Installation, isolation, conductor sizing, protection, commissioning, and seal requirements should be handled by a qualified electrician under local rules.
The 80 A comparison value is the meter's direct-connected circuit limit. This makes it easier to compare with CT-operated meters, whose measurable circuit current depends on the selected transformer ratio.
Compatibility and local access
The meter does not need ABB cloud services. A building-management system, energy-management system, gateway, or computer can poll its registers locally over RS-485 Modbus RTU. ABB also documents EQ Bus operation on the RS-485 interface.
Home Assistant can use the meter through the generic Modbus integration when an appropriate RS-485 adapter or network gateway is present and the ABB register map is configured manually. This is standards-based compatibility, not plug-and-play device discovery or an ABB-specific Home Assistant integration.
Solar import and export
Separate import and export registers make the A43 312-100 suitable for observing grid consumption and exported generation in solar and distributed-energy projects. This field describes measurement capability only: the meter does not control an inverter, enforce an export limit, or replace the control hardware required by a specific solar system.
Suitable applications
The strongest fit is commercial buildings, light industry, multi-tenant sub-metering, energy audits, solar grid-point measurement, and building-management projects needing a local protocol and certified accuracy. It may be more equipment than a homeowner needs when a simpler app-first monitor would provide enough visibility.

The tradeoffs are professional installation, no native consumer app or Wi-Fi, no vendor-hosted dashboard, and manual integration work for Home Assistant.
